Transferable Skills: Applying to Jobs You Haven’t Done Yet

Presenter: Lisa Laughter

Session Description: Have you ever looked at a job posting and thought, “I could do this job, but I don’t exactly meet all the requirements?” The key to confidently applying anyway, is in learning to identify and communicate your transferrable skills in a new context. In this one-hour workshop, we will work together to identify the basic elements of your current talents and skills, explore ways they might translate into a new future for your career, and, most importantly, communicate to a potential employer how the skills you’ve employed in past achievements, are directly applicable to future successes with their team. Practical tips and practice opportunities support incorporating your newly defined transferable skills into resume bullets, cover letters, and interview story prep to align your skills with the Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required in various job postings and Career Track descriptions.

Attendees will:

  • Identify their transferrable skills
  • Write accomplishment statements that align with skills and the position description of a desired job
  • Apply for jobs you haven’t done before
