Unleashing Our Mutual Potential: Growing as an Equity-Oriented Supervisor of Student Employees

Presenters: Amanda Bent, Amy Louise Casey Azuma

Panelists: Kelly Chang, Gabriela Urias, Diego Holguin

Session Description: Discover the transformative potential of student employment. This combined presentation and panel will elevate the significance of both the supervisor and student employee roles, offering sustainable strategies to enhance our programs while cultivating equity-minded, leadership-building experiences.

Supervising student employees offers fulfilling growth opportunities and allows us to actively engage with the heart of UC Berkeley’s mission: serving our students. On-campus employment offers income to students while also providing them an opportunity to gain meaningful professional experience and skills that ultimately prepare them to thrive in a complex work environment. Recent publications validate on-campus jobs as High-Impact Practices (Kuh, 2008), delivering evidence-based educational benefits, particularly for historically underserved demographic groups in higher education. With supervisors being primarily responsible for student employee growth (NASPA, 2019), it is critical that staff get support to develop as supervisors and mentors of students.

Join our panel for a deep dive into real-world experiences, where colleagues will share success stories and practical insights on effective student team management. We will also present a collaboratively crafted resource guide encompassing transformative and tactical dimensions of student employment. This guide not only unlocks the potential of professional development for student employees but also empowers supervisors to provide meaningful supervision and impactful mentorship.

Whether a seasoned supervisor of student employees or exploring the possibility, attendees will: (1) learn how to refine their supervisory practices, (2) grow their network, (3) explore sustainable strategies to effectively manage student employment programs, and (4) design developmental leadership experiences that prioritize equity and inclusivity.

Embark on a journey of discovery, where mentorship, skill development, and career growth intersect. Together, let's shape the future of student supervision and pave the way for meaningful professional development opportunities for both staff and students alike.
