Disrupting Our Normal: Reimagining the Cultural Blueprint of DEIBJA

PresentersBritt McClintock and Kala Stepter

Session Description: It is 2073 and the fight is over…well, kind of. Hearts and ears are open when an issue of inequity arises. You are safe and encouraged to pursue justice. You and all of your colleagues have made a commitment to implementing DEIBJA in your workplace. There’s no need to convince anyone of its urgency. So now what? With inspiration from Afrofuturist concepts, this session will ask you to reimagine how DEIBJA initiatives can be embodied in individuals and reinforced in institutions. Through this workshop, you will have the opportunity to consider a cultural blueprint without barriers. We will invite you to explore questions like “What would happen if we demolished the systems that we accept as necessary and omnipresent, and rebuilt them to serve all of us?” and “How do we get there?” Whether you are an individual contributor or a director of a department, this session will allow you to take the big ideas of future change and implement them in accessible and attainable ways.

Learning Objectives:

  • To develop skills to identify the opportunities to disrupt inequitable and unjust systems
  • To equip folks with the tools to do futuristic freedom dreaming in their day-to-day
  • To strategize methods of making incremental progress toward long and short-term change
