Reimagining Our Relationship to Work: A Cultural Perspective

PresentersJulie Resnik and Kiran Johl

Session Description: In this session, participants will examine their personal histories and how they relate to their current relationship with work. We will explore different factors that shape the way we engage in the workplace: what we saw in our households growing up, our cultural background and identity, and early career experiences. We will discuss how we are impacted by larger societal experiences like the pandemic, economy, and institutional racism. By evaluating our experiences and values, we can have a better understanding of how we can find more satisfaction, and feel more recharged, in our current roles and find future opportunities at work. Participants will develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and cultural competence, and reimagine their relationship to work. This session includes participation, storytelling, and self-reflection. There will be time for creativity during the self-reflection time. Participants are invited to bring a pen and/or drawing materials to this session.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Improve and increase self-awareness about one’s relationship with work from a cultural perspective
  2. Actively explore how one’s values and influences shape their experiences at work
  3. Apply knowledge gained during the workshop practically, such that participants gain clarity about career preferences, goals, and opportunities
