Connect, then Lead

Presenters: Carolyn Godfrey

Session Description:

Most people typically think of leaders as individuals who hold positions of authority inside organizations. Although true, a more expanded view of leadership is that everyone is a leader in their life because at its core, leadership behaviors enable you to achieve goals and to build relationships that support you in pursuing your aspirations. That is what leaders do in organizations and what you do to live the life you want personally and professionally.

Leadership is a large topic but at its foundation—and a key to leadership success—is influencing. Before people decide what they think of your message, they decide what they think of you. A growing body of research suggests that the way to influence and to lead is to demonstrate traits of both warmth and strength. Decades of sociology and psychology research show that by first focusing on displaying warmth, then blending in demonstrations of strength, leaders will find a clearer path to influence.

For some of us, integrating both warmth and strength simultaneously can be difficult because it requires you to manage your emotional state and to be intentional about the outcomes of your communication before you interact with others. And let’s face it—some people and situations can push your buttons. Understanding yourself and specifically your emotional intelligence is the first place to start.

Whether you are managing people or advancing your career, this session will offer specific tools on how to authentically project warmth and strength, elevating your ability to influence others.

In this interactive presentation you will learn the first principles of influencing:

  • The latest research on influence and leadership.
  • How to increase emotional intelligence and why it’s important.
  • How to naturally express non-verbal cues that project warmth and strength allowing you to connect, then lead.
