Article 24 - Instructional Workload: Berkeley Campus Workload Standards

BERKELEY CAMPUS GUIDELINES FOR INSTRUCTIONAL WORKLOAD STANDARDS PURSUANT TO THE UC-AFT AGREEMENT FOR UNIT 18

The following guidelines have been developed pursuant to Article 24 (Instructional Workload) of the UC-AFT Agreement for Unit 18. The Guidelines are separated into three sections: the definition of an Instructional Workload Course (IWC); course equivalencies; and workload values. The Instructional Workload Course (IWC) is defined in the Agreement and serves as the base unit of measure for equivalencies and workload values. Courses that do not fit the definition of an IWC are given a weighting which is proportionate to an IWC. Workload values are factors that may adjust the weighting of a particular course or course equivalency each time a course is taught. The weighting for workload values is also expressed in terms proportionate to an IWC.

THE INSTRUCTIONAL WORKLOAD COURSE

A regularly scheduled instructional offering
requiring significant academic preparation
outside class and meets a minimum of three

COURSE EQUIVALENCIES
Description of the Instructional Offering Weight*
1. One hour lecture per week requiring significant academic preparation outside of class. .50
2. Two hour lecture per week requiring significant academic preparation outside of class. .75
3. Reading and Composition, and Subject A courses that meet three or more hours per week and where the Lecturer is responsible for grading written compositions. 1.20
4. One hour per week of the following (assuming little or no outside preparation):
  • laboratory (Note:  Some courses have been weighted differently after examining individual course needs)
  • studio
  • self-paced instruction program
  • individualized instruction (other than 197, 198, 199, 297, 298 and 299)
  • discussion sections

5. One hour per week of the following (assuming significant academic preparation outside class):
  • laboratory
  • studio
  • self-paced instruction program

WORKLOAD VALUES
Description of the Instructional Offering Weight*
Teaching an additional section of a R & C course 1.00
Team teaching a course:  
  a. When the faculty divide preparation and lecture responsibilities (e.g., two lecturers teaching one course) .50
  b. When lecturers divide preparation responsibilities, but attend all lectures (e.g., two lecturers teaching one course) .67
*Note: Weights for equivalencies and workload values have been established proportionate to an Instructional Workload Course.
WORKOAD EQUIVALENCIES
The Campus will provide workload equivalencies to NSF when the work is required by the University in addition to normal teaching duties. Departments are encouraged to consult Article 24, Section A.6 for information about equivalencies
