It Starts with You: Relationship Building at Berkeley

Presenters: Charlotte Cowden and Jennifer Mora

About: Working at a large university can be difficult to navigate, and creating connections in a decentralized environment is sometimes a challenge. And this was before 2020. This past year, we stretched, pivoted, and demonstrated resilience in new and unexpected ways. As we reimagine our work life in the coming year, strengthening relationships with campus colleagues will require creativity and courage to get out of our comfort zones. Our relationships are critical to making connections, feeling satisfied at work, and building community at UC Berkeley. How can we make Berkeley feel small and a place where we all belong? It starts with you!

In this session, we will explore ways to foster a culture of recognition and appreciation, find space to connect with others, and cultivate strategies to champion our contributions. We will share ways that staff can empower themselves and intentionally lift each other up in the workplace. Topics include: developing your personal and professional networks; celebrating your accomplishments; and communicating in a decentralized environment.

Promoting Professional Development & Community Building Through the Dean of Students Externship Program

Presenter: Deepak Sharma

About: As Berkeley has many unique campus departments there is often a desire to collaborate across departments, and for colleagues to grow and learn in new areas. Our day-to-day often times makes this difficult and even with existing campus fellowships for staff, there continues to be a need to provide opportunities like this. Through the Dean of Students Externship Program, this need is being addressed.

What began as a job shadowing experience has evolved to a project based approach, stimulating autonomy and creativity for externs and sponsors. This opens new ideas and opportunities for colleagues to support each other in professional development, while also developing new approaches to serving students and addressing departmental needs. Sponsors propose a short-term project ranging from 1 week to 3 months, and externs share their development goals. As coordinators for this program, we match the sponsors’ projects with an extern’s developmental goals. In addition, the coordinators will conduct outreach to potential externs or sponsors in order to insure that a match is well suited.

As the 4th iteration of this program gets under way, this program has created nearly 20 matches between sponsors and externs resulting in new knowledge gained as well as new insights from colleagues. This program provides an innovative path to professional development that incorporates experiential learning and promotes community building across departments.

Dante's Comedy and the Art of Work

Presenter: Nicole Pagano

About: What if a wise and beautiful work of art could help you turn toward the promise and challenges of our time and inspire a new way forward? Can diverse experiences serve as a springboard for transformative work? Perhaps, after a year of unprecedented change and isolation, you feel motivated to dig deep or chart a fresh path—or both!

The Divine Comedy is a poetic masterpiece by Dante Alighieri that has inspired readers for over seven centuries and remains one of the most actively translated works of all time. The poem’s lasting relevance speaks to the rewarding journey it offers readers to this day—from a place of troubling uncertainty to one of courage and community. In a world that can feel more divided than ever, we will turn to the souls in Dante’s Commedia for their wisdom on the themes of work and see how they can support our professional growth and the service we provide for others.

This workshop will offer an introduction to Dante’s opus and a brief visit to his realms of the afterlife: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Our activities will incorporate artistic renderings of the poem to accommodate multiple learning styles. Attendees will be asked to work in one small group and participate in brief reflection exercises that require no previous knowledge of the poem. All are welcome!

How to Protect Your Peace While Fighting for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Presenters: Aryn JacksonBreanne Tscheng and Justin Oliver

About: As if the fatigue of working virtually during a pandemic wasn’t enough, the demand for many BIPOC staff is compounded by the everyday work of fighting against systemic racism and oppression. Given the nature of the current climate and events there’s a new sense of urgency across many departments to address issues of racial diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) and often as BIPOC staff we feel a moral obligation to take on this work even at the expense of our own physical, mental, and emotional health.

So how do we move the needle on toward social justice without dismantling ourselves? During this session we will discuss our journey establishing our department’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Awareness, & Action committee (IDEAA) including the lessons learned about how to manage battle fatigue and bureaucracy.

We hope this session serves as a brave space for BIPOC staff to be in community and share strategies for managing burnout. In addition, we hope that our non-BIPOC staff will learn how they can serve as allies to not only help support their fellow colleagues but to hold departments accountable for the espoused DEIB values we aspire to embody.

Interrupting Impostor Syndrome Through Creative Play

Presenter: Sabina Morgan

About: Impostor syndrome is defined as a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their skills, talents or accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud." These doubts limit our participation in many activities and prevent us from believing that we are worthy of opportunity and career advancement. Together we will explore our self-limiting stories through creative expression such as meditative drawing, vision boarding, and creative writing in order to make our stories known to ourselves.

From weekly team meetings to big collaborative planning sessions, what does it take to have a meeting that is worth everyone's time? Let's talk about agendas, tools, and techniques to brainstorm, problem solve, collaborate, and network. There are lots of different types of meetings but regardless of the goals, everyone wants to get stuff done, make sure everyone's voice is heard, and get out on time.

Finding my Voice in a Complex Organization

Presenters: Ari WolfeClaire-Marie KooiMichael Mansfield and Fatima Alleyne

About: Navigating a complex organization and trying to build your community can be daunting and frustrating. It can be even more challenging if you struggle with the lack of representation and community on campus, imposter syndrome, lack of leadership opportunities, finding your “voice”, as well as a host of other factors. For some of us there is even a lack of opportunity for failure -- for failure is associated with our entire race.

For others, you might be curious about how to grow your cultural competence to foster collaborations with people of other cultures, races, experiences, beliefs, and points of view and are afraid that you will make a mistake. You might be curious about how to support your colleagues, who might have been overlooked, silenced, unheard, or passed over. If you fit one of these categories, this workshop is for you!

In this interactive workshop, participants will engage in a gap analysis exercise to:

  1. define your career goals and
  2. develop your cultural competence.

This exercise is intended to help participants identify strategies to fill the gaps identified in order to successfully achieve their goals. This includes community building, finding mentors and/or mentees, identifying professional development opportunities, perspective analysis, and skill-building (e.g. growth mindset, uncomfortable conversations, effective communication approaches, for career advancement).

In Pursuit of Team Synergy: Enhancing Psychological Safety Skills Demo

Presenter: Catherine Ciano

About: Distributed leadership, also known as shared or self-managed leadership, is a form of team leadership in which the responsibility for directing and managing collective efforts becomes shared among team members. Teams with shared leadership comprise more than 33% of all organizational teams, with 78% of Fortune 1000 companies reporting the use of self-managed teams. Sharing leadership functions across individual team members has the benefit of allowing overseeing leaders to focus more resources on unanticipated novel demands. This exciting trend in team leadership allows increased opportunity for individual team members to engage with improving team processes such as psychological safety. Psychological safety refers to the degree to which ones’ environment is perceived to be safe for interpersonal risk taking. Psychological safety is associated with team learning, improved collaboration across differences, and better organizational outcomes.

This session will demo concepts and tools from the virtual lab course: Enhancing Team Psychological Safety. Attendees will observe and practice specific behavior shaping techniques for the purpose of an improved sense of team psychological safety. This session will be interactive and plans to utilize Zoom breakout rooms. During this session, participants will:

  • learn skills to communicate and collaborate with team members more effectively,
  • improve leadership abilities, specifically within environments where there is not a single designated leader, but rather when leadership is shared among all members of the team,
  • and grow in their ability to make work more inclusive and accessible via cultivation of psychological safety.

Stuck on the Escalator: What We Know Now about Thriving

Presenter: Danny Ceballos, MBA, MAOD

About: When the pandemic hit, most of us were frozen in our tracks - having no idea what to do. This isn't surprising, and according to a recent Kaiser report, 7 in 10 employees report the pandemic is the most stressful time of their entire professional career. So what can we do differently and be better prepared for the next crisis that drops in our laps - because although new may not want to acknowledge it, this won't be our last!

There is promising new research on how our brain works that gives us hope. Knowing this "X factor" - called "mental fitness" - can give us the powerful insight, knowledge, and practical tools that can best prepare us for whatever comes next! Mental fitness is a measure of the strength of your positive mental muscles (Sage) versus the negative (Saboteur). This measure of your Mental Fitness is called PQ (Positive Intelligence Quotient). A key to Mental Fitness is to weaken the internal Saboteurs who generate all your “negativity” in the way they respond to challenges. Your Saboteurs cause all your stress, anxiety, self-doubt, frustration, regret, guilt, and unhappiness. Your “Sage” lives in an entirely different region of your brain and handles challenges in ways that produce positive emotions like curiosity, empathy, creativity, calm, and clear-headed laser-focused action.

The research - with 500,000 participants - has shown PQ to be the best predictor of how happy you are and how well you perform relative to your potential. It is the basis of Shirzad Chamine’s New York Times bestselling book, Positive Intelligence. Join us for this powerful session on increasing your "x factor" - preparing your professionally and personally for the next crisis that comes into your life - AND optimizing your work, happiness, and relationships NOW.
