SAW 2018 Mud Fest: A Bonding Experience

As the dust has settled and I’m caught up on work...

following the hectic but fun-filled Spring Staff Appreciation Week (with events including a Faculty Lecture, Field Day, and Charter Day), I have had some time to reflect on my favorite experience. I was a member of the Field Day Committee co-sponsored by Central HR and University Health Services. While Field Day (aka Mud Fest 2018) was a blast, what I enjoyed even more was the opportunity to meet and work with staff members on campus outside of my department. After winter break, a group of about 8 of us started meeting every few weeks at the Tang Center to plan this brand new fun event for staff as a part of Spring Staff Appreciation Week.

First of all, let me just say that the Tang Center is a beautiful building with a sweet view of the new Legends Aquatic Facility (that I am dying to cannonball into every single time that I pass it).Second, and more importantly, working with this new group of people was such a rewarding experience because it felt great expanding my UC Berkeley network. I always left those meetings with a positive vibe because I was working with a group of smart, kind, and welcoming women who care about their work and are great at it. I found that we all fostered a warm, productive team environment with Cori Evans, Interim Wellness Program Supervisor, leading the committee with ease, setting us all up for success. Calm, cool, collected Cori! And every single person on the committee was all smiles on the day of the event, even through setting up in the pouring rain. A big shout out to Jen, Meckell, Natalie, Kim, Lindy… you guys rock! The positive energy was infectious and motivating to see as a new(ish) employee.

Ultimately, the best part of the day was seeing staff feel appreciated.

And teamwork truly made the dream work. Despite the iffy weather (rain and SO much mud), I thought the day was a blast. I loved seeing staff being silly and taking the time to show up. I loved seeing my boss’s boss play pong with a muddy volleyball. I loved seeing people come out and connect with each other through old-school games and carnival treats. But ultimately, the best part was seeing staff feel appreciated. I’m excited to have entered the campus community at this time, because I see all the effort being made to ramp up our staff appreciation, and that really connects with me deep down. Staff are so important and integral to the mission, and I’m excited to see various departments working hard to make that known across campus.

Through this experience, I explored new places at Cal, worked towards a goal with new people outside my department, and made some new friends (cheesy but so true!). Moving forward, I will gladly jump on any opportunity to expand my network and work with different groups here. I tip my hat to the fabulous Field Day Committee, the volunteers, and everyone else involved in this event. The day was a success thanks to you! Now, it’s time to clean the mud off my boots and start planning for Summerfest!
