A few weeks into my new position within Central HR, I decided (with a kind nudge from my supervisor) to take advantage of a resource offered here on campus for new professionals- the New Professionals Network. The event started at the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism (directions HERE) where we had the privilege of viewing a photography exhibit documenting “50 Year of Social Movement Photography.” Walking through the photography exhibit was a treat. I found myself getting lost in the powerful depiction of life at Berkeley over the past several decades. I observed artistic and powerful images of social history through the lens of those who were physically there to capture the moment. The exhibit gave me a taste of the passion and activism that has flowed through the veins of this institution for decades.
After browsing the exhibit, the group migrated over to the Daily Pint for a social hour to mingle with new peers. I met people working in a diverse array of departments across campus, from University Development and Alumni Relations to the History Department. In my short time here at Berkeley, I have noticed the quality, compassion, and pride in the university’s employees. I enjoyed listening to other employee experiences, and felt encouraged to learn about other roles and resources campus wide. This experience has encouraged me to continue exploring the resources and groups offered on campus. My new goal is to expand my repertoire of Berkeley experiences. I hope to gradually start utilizing the programs and resources here so that I can experience new areas of campus and meet different colleagues.
Starting out as a new employee can be daunting, but the NPN event left me feeling excited at this budding opportunity to begin expanding my network as a Berkeley staff member. I am optimistic to continue learning about the resources available on campus that are focused on enhancing employee experience. This informal networking event opened my eyes to all that this university has to offer its employees. The enriching professional, social and educational opportunities are available, we just have to find it. I am proud to work at this institution, and I think that the resources for employee engagement exist to appreciate all those who work so hard to keep UC Berkeley the magical place that it is. The trick is uncovering the opportunities. In the coming months, I’m going to take a closer look at just some the of the many opportunities here at Cal.
