What roles have you had throughout your time at Berkeley?
I started as the Service Coordinator for Student Groups at the Public Service Center in 2013 then became a Program Manager. I am now currently the Assistant Director at the Multicultural Community Center.
What challenges did you face when seeking your next opportunity and how did you overcome them?
Two challenges I faced when I was seeking the Assistant Director role was my own uncertainty about staying at UC Berkeley and the second was my own insecurities about being a good fit for the role. I overcame these challenges by relying on the networks of friends and colleagues I cultivated to inform my decision. They reminded me of my own personal mission and it's alignment with my current role.
What factors do you think helped you switch positions successfully within Berkeley?
The relationships I built definitely contributed to my success switching positions. Moreover, the professional development opportunities I advocated for at the Public Service Center allowed me to develop a new skill set for my current role. This included a 3 day introduction to coaching and the Changemaker Fellowship at the Pacific School of Religion where I completed a Certificate for Spirituality and Social Change.
What was the most motivating thing someone told you on your career journey?
Don't leave just to leave. Leave because you are being pulled to something new.
Any final words of wisdom to staff looking to grow their careers at UC Berkeley?
I think Berkeley is a very challenging workplace for many reasons. It is important to never forget why you came into your work. Whether it’s to provide a livelihood for your family, to support students, or to innovate -- I would encourage students and staff to establish boundaries that protect your motivation and capacity.
