Jo Mackness previously served at the Haas School of Business from 2008-16 as the school’s Chief Strategy & Operating Officer and Senior Assistant Dean, and previously as Executive Director of its Center for Responsible Business. She has over two decades of experience with many aspects of the Human Resource Officer portfolio, ranging from human capital management where Jo began her career as an HR consultant, to strategic thinking/planning and change management, which comprise the balance of her work today.
Jo’s ability to strengthen the link between people and strategy, as well as manage, motivate and retain talent, is invaluable as Berkeley continues to develop human resources services and the administrative infrastructure necessary to support the long-term success of its campus. During this interim period, the primary focus of her efforts will be on strategic planning for service provision and administrative infrastructure. Among Jo’s management qualities is her deep commitment to working in a collaborative, transparent and inclusive manner, which allows her to build lasting relationships with students, faculty, staff colleagues and peer institutions. Committed to the public mission of our University, and herself a product of the UC system (she holds degrees from both UCLA and UC Berkeley), Jo brings a dedication to social impact and problem-solving to this position.
