A Conversation Across the Divide: David French and Erwin Chemerinsky Discuss the National Climate

November 14, 2018

2:00 - 3:30 pm

Bechtel Engineering Center, Sibley Auditorium

We are thrilled to welcome students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends of the campus to the second event in the Conversations Across the Divide speaker series we are continuing to host this year. You can view the first in this series between Robert Reich, Chancellor's Professor and Carmel P. Friesen Chair in Public Policy and former Secretary of Labor and Stephen Moore, Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Project for Economic Growth, Institute for Economic Freedom and Opportunity at the Heritage Foundation at freespeech.berkeley.edu

David French is a senior fellow at the National Review Institute, an attorney, a veteran, and the former president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE). David has been touring college campuses on the topic of civility in our current national context. He will be joined on stage by fellow attorney, Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law, and Dean of Berkeley Law, Erwin Chemerinsky. UC Berkeley Junior, Political Science major, and leader of BridgeUSA, Manu Meel will moderate a conversation on topics relevant to today’s increasingly divided national context, including the #metoo movement, the role of historic national symbols, international relations and diplomacy, and immigration.

Our hope for this speaker series is to highlight dynamic conversations across divergent views in a way that will both expand minds and model the notion that people can discuss different viewpoints with intellect, passion, and humanity.

We hope to bring additional speakers from diverse backgrounds and identities later this year.

A closed-captioned recording of this conversation will be posted at freespeech.berkeley.edu when the event has concluded.

Special thanks to the Berkeley Chapter of BridgeUSA, the National Review Institute, and Berkeley Law for partnering on this event.
