A panel of thought leaders discussing what is Free Speech on the Berkeley campus. A complete list of panelists will be announced by October 10. PEN America, our partner for this event, is a free expression organization with a more than 90-year track record of fostering dialogue and understanding that transcends social, political and geographic boundaries. In November 2016 PEN published And Campus for All, a report that sought, above all, to underscore the need for reasoned discussion as well as more nuanced interchange on the basis of mutual respect—a foundational premise also underpinning the tenor and hopes I have for the day’s discussion.
