Information for Employees

Number One  Are other unions that represent University employees going on strike?

Only the bargaining unit(s) that have provided notice are formally going on strike.

Generally, represented employees covered by other collective bargaining agreements (CBA) cannot strike. More specifically, represented employees may not lawfully participate in concerted activity (e.g., strikes, stoppages, interruptions of work, sympathy strikes) if they are covered by an applicable, unexpired CBA that contains a “No Strike” provision. Most of the UC’s represented employees are covered by an active CBA with valid “No Strike” provisions.

Number Two  What will happen during the strike?

Employees participating in the strike may choose not to show up to work, join a picket line on campus, pass out informational flyers, and/or participate in other activities organized by the union(s).

Number Three  Are non-striking employees expected to come to work on the strike day(s)?

Yes. All non-striking campus employees are expected to be at work as scheduled and to perform work as assigned. Offices will be kept open, courses will be taught, research will be performed, and the campus will endeavor to provide normal or equivalent services. If an individual encounters a picket line, the law protects their right to cross it.

Number Four  Will the picketers or striking employees block me from coming to work?

Pickets are lawful so long as they are peaceful, conducted only on public property (e.g., sidewalks), do not block ingress to and egress from facilities, do not interfere with the normal course of business, and do not prohibit non-striking employees from working.

Non-striking employees should avoid confrontations and do not have to respond to any comments that picketers may direct at them. Non-striking employees should not invite or engage in any exchanges that might inflame the situation. If an employee feels they are being harassed or prevented from working by picketers or striking employees, the employee should immediately notify their supervisor.

Number Five  Am I permitted to talk to my supervisor or manager about any of this?

Any questions about the strike, including questions regarding union membership, union activities, and strike-related activities, should be directed to your union representative
