Phishing attempts and cybersecurity education

December 13, 2023

To our campus community,

Recently, several campus community members have received phishing attempts, via text or email, appearing to be from the Chancellor or UC Path. These attempts were aimed at gathering banking information. (Read more at
https://link.ucop.edu/2023/12/05/beware-of-phishing-emails-impersonating-ucpath/)

Please be cautious if you receive unexpected communication that appears to be from the Chancellor or UC Path, and never provide financial information in response to a text or email.

The campus’s annual cybersecurity training provides guidance on how to identify phishing attempts. We urge you to complete this mandatory training if you have not already done so this year. You can find your assigned training, and its completion status, by logging into the UC Learning Center (
uc.sumtotal.host) and selecting the “Required Training (Training Analysis)” button.

Approximately 80% of employees have completed their cybersecurity training as of Dec. 6. We are seeking 100% compliance by Dec. 20, to ensure the campus community is fully informed before the start of the new year. Please do your part. Your supervisors know your training status and are encouraged to remind you. Thank you in advance for completing the training.

To report a possible phishing attempt or learn about recent attempts, please visit the “Phish Tank” website maintained by UC Berkeley’s Information Security Office.

Thank you, keep safe, and best wishes for the holiday season,

Gabriel Gonzalez
