Managers often review their operations to determine whether there are performance gaps and opportunities for improvement. Sometimes improvements require changes in staffing, including reassignments; changes in roles and responsibilities; or elimination of positions.

Central Human Resources, in partnership with other campus groups, has put together Guidelines for department reorganizations (PDF) to assist departments in their planning.

Regardless of whether or not this is your first time initiating or managing an organizational restructuring effort, these guidelines are not a substitute for involving subject matter experts referenced in each section and at the end of the document.
