The Conversation You’re Avoiding

Presenter:

Lorraine Armijos

Session Description:

Think of a conversation you've been putting off. The feedback you need to give. The boundary you need to set. The question you need to ask. Got it?

That conversation is costing you more than you think.

Most professionals avoid difficult conversations not because they don't care, but because no one ever taught them how. We worry we'll damage the relationship, say it wrong, or make things awkward. So we stay silent. The problem grows. Resentment builds. And the conversation gets harder the longer we wait.

This workshop gives you both the mindset and the method.

You'll learn how to show up with courage while creating psychological safety, then master a simple four-part structure for feedback that is factual, clear, and forward-focused. You'll describe the Situation, name the specific Behavior, explain the Impact, and set a clear Expectation for what you need going forward.

You need both. The mindset gets you IN the room. The method gets you THROUGH the conversation.

Drawing from executive coaching principles and 20 years in operations, Lorraine Armijos will guide you through the complete framework with concrete examples. You'll practice with a partner using realistic workplace scenarios and receive real-time feedback on your approach.

Whether you need to address a colleague's missed deadlines, set boundaries with your manager, or give developmental feedback to someone you supervise, this structure works at any level and in any direction. You'll leave with a commitment to have the conversation you've been avoiding, using a method that protects the relationship while addressing the issue.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognize the hidden costs of avoided conversations and identify one specific conversation you need to have

  • Apply a four-part feedback structure (Situation, Behavior, Impact, Expectation) to deliver feedback that is factual, clear, and forward-focused
  • Practice delivering difficult feedback in a safe environment and commit to one real conversation within the week
