What’s it about?
Managers have let us know they need more support and guidance. In response, we developed this program to give you the tools and approaches needed to navigate an environment that is going through unprecedented change. Here at UC Berkeley we are facing the transition of senior administration, retirement of key staff at all levels, rapidly evolving operational tools and significant budget reductions, amongst many other factors.
How will it help me?
The program is designed to support you by:
- Strengthening networks and collaboration among leaders and managers.
- Building capabilities to lead others and manage effectively, in areas such as managing through change, building trust, and innovative problem solving.
- Helping managers feel supported and more engaged with the larger goals of the organization.
How does it work?
This will be an interactive program that presents cutting edge ideas from UC faculty and other thought leaders, combined with a strategic view of the organization by senior UC leaders. Facilitated conversations with peers will then look at how to apply these ideas to real campus scenarios. The initial offering will be a series of 4 workshops spaced throughout the remainder of the calendar year.
Who can attend?
This program will be open to employees with manager titles. We are able to accommodate up to 100 people for the first workshop.
Kick-Off Session – April 20, 2017
Our first session will be “Managing through Transition: Looking In and Looking Out.” This session will be led by Homa Bahrami (bio attached), an expert in organizational flexibility/team effectiveness and faculty member at the Haas School of Business, and Carol Christ, our Interim EVCP. They will engage in a “fireside chat” focusing on the challenges and opportunities in our current environment. Homa will then give a presentation on thriving in a fluid world, based on 25 years of her field research in Silicon Valley. The workshop will focus on questions such as, “What are the qualities that enable professionals to succeed in a fast-changing world?”, “What are the different types of “adaptive DNA”, reflecting our instinctive responses to change and uncertainty?” and “What can we learn from innovative leaders who thrive on a fluid reality?” Included will be conversations with your colleagues and action planning. In addition, all those registered will receive a link to Prof. Homa Bahrami’s assessment “Adaptive DNA Survey”. The survey will provide insights into your instinctive approach in dealing with change - benefits include self-awareness and the ability to utilize your natural strengths. You will receive a personalized report of your results at the session.
Following the session, we will post the video segment of Homa’s talk, as well as related articles, other video clips, and podcast links on the Wisdom Cafe. We will also start a discussion thread on Manager Musings to help you share your questions, thoughts and ideas.
