UC Berkeley is implementing the Phased Retirement Program from April 1, 2012 through December 31, 2014 to enable eligible career staff to voluntarily reduce their working time and corresponding pay. The intent of the program is to facilitate transition into retirement for eligible employees who are 55 or older. The campus is offering the program to pave the way for longer term planning for employees, their families and their departments. Departments will be able to better evaluate their needs and plan for transferring an employee’s responsibilities before retirement. The program also creates the potential for cost savings while offering employees a cash incentive.

During participation in the program, UCRP retirement service credit accrues at the reduced appointment percentage. Employees who participate in the program will earn less service credit toward the UC Retirement Plan.

A full Phased Retirement Program description, sign-up forms, and implementing procedures for administrators is provided to assist departments and employees choosing to use the Phased Retirement Program. An approved Phased Retirement Contract (U290) (PDF) and a Phased Retirement General Release of Claims (U291) (PDF) for all pay schedules must be received by Central HR Employee Relations no later than 5:00 p.m. on the 1st of the month in which the contract/amendment is effective to allow for processing.
